Rules

Rules

1.      Be good to each other.
Just because this is a horror game, doesn’t mean that it should be horrifying OOC as well. Respect each other’s boundaries - don’t thread-push, warn for triggers, etc. Any reports of harassment, personal attacks, or OOC threats will be investigated by mods, and may be cause for removal from the game.

2.      Respect the OOC/IC boundary.
OOC knowledge does not equal IC knowledge. If the mods let something slip OOCly, but haven’t revealed it in game, your character does not have the information, nor do they know what happened in scenes where they weren’t present. It should also go without saying that IC relationships between characters should be defined by the characters’ interactions, not by how the players of those characters feel about each other.

3.      Communicate.
Plots with major effects on other characters (including mod NPCs) must be discussed with the other players before being put into play. Plots involving the whole game, especially those likely to cause major damage or change to the setting, should be discussed in the OOC comm at least two days before the plot is started, as well as cleared with the mods.

If your plot requires significant mod input (particularly if it takes place in a new area of the setting or involves threads with mod NPCs), please be considerate of the mods and give us plenty of notice, so we can arrange it!

4.      Be open with criticism.
If you have a problem with the setting, the plot, or the game in general, please bring it to the mods. If you have a problem with another player, however, please try to resolve the problem amicably between you before bringing it to the mods. All Lethevale players should have a HMD of some kind open at all times, either on their journal or on the game-wide HMD post; journal HMDs should ideally have anon commenting on and IP screening off.

5.      Applying!
Lethevale accepts both canon and original characters, with setting-appropriate AU backstories; CRAUs are not accepted. Duplicates of the same character are not allowed (except where they come from sufficiently different canons – for example, Sherlock Holmes from the original novels and Sherlock Holmes from Elementary would both be able to be in-game at the same time, but two versions of BBC Sherlock Holmes would not.)

Reserves are not necessary for applying; however, where multiple versions of the same character are applied, reserved applications will be given priority. Applications are always open here and should be posted publicly to your character’s journal.

6.      Character caps.
Currently, the character limit is 2 characters per person. We ask that you wait a minimum of one month between characters, to ensure that your activity is sufficient with those you have, and that you do not apply with two characters from the same canon without first clearing it with the mods.

The overall character cap is currently 25 characters. This is to ensure that every character can have the mod attention to make the game as engaging and interesting as possible.

7.      Activity.
Activity checks will be posted monthly on the OOC comm. Players must provide evidence of at least one post or thread started within the AC period, with at least 10 comments total from them.

A warning list will be posted 1 week after the activity check goes up. After a further week, all non-hiatused players who have not posted to the activity check will be idled out of the game. Players may request a strike if they have not made AC, with a limit of three strikes per year.

8.      Hiatuses and drops.
Hiatuses must be posted both on the OOC comm and on the hiatus/drops post. There is no official limit to how long you can be on hiatus: however, if the mods feel you have spent a very long time on hiatus or are using hiatus to avoid AC checks, we may talk to you about whether the game is right for you.

Drops must be posted to the hiatus/drops post, and should also be posted to the OOC comm. ICly, your character will by default be assumed to have simply disappeared; however, you may choose to have the character killed. Please note that your character dying does not mean you have to drop them. If your character is killed, you may choose to take a death change and continue playing them as a monster or ghost.

9.      Reapplications.
If a character was dropped, their player may choose to withdraw their drop at any time in the following two months, and reintroduce their character with backstory and CR intact (if the character was ICly killed in the first drop, they must take a death change, as above). Characters reintroduced thereafter by the same player may still keep their AU backstory, regained memories, and CR intact, but must have their application updated and re-submitted to reflect in-game changes. This option is not open to characters who have idled out.

If a character idles out or is permanently killed, or if another player wishes to app a character who has previously dropped, the character may be reintroduced but is required to have a different AU backstory. Any memories regained or in-game CR developed will not carry over.

Reapplications will be assessed on the same criteria as first-time applications. To minimise conflict and to keep IC deaths and disappearances meaningful, we ask that new versions of a character not be introduced within a month of the previous version being dropped.

10.      Changes and complaints.
If you feel that someone in the game (and that includes the mods) is failing to abide by these rules, or that their behaviour is otherwise a problem, please comment to this post, in the screened comment thread provided for the purpose. Guidance on complaints is given in the top-level.
